Asparagus Market Size in Europe

The Europe asparagus market totaled $X in 2022, growing by 6.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Asparagus Production in Europe

In value terms, asparagus production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together comprising 71% of total production. France, the Netherlands, Poland and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +19.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average asparagus yield totaled X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 5.7%. Exports in Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of asparagus, when their volume decreased by -26.5% to X tons. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 15%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, asparagus exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 39%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Spain was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 37% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Italy (12%), Greece (8.3%), France (7.8%) and Germany (4.6%). Belgium (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest asparagus supplying countries in Europe were Spain ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 67% share of total exports.

Spain, with a CAGR of +7.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -7.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of asparagus were imported in Europe; shrinking by -18.9% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, asparagus imports fell notably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 40% share of total imports. Spain, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Denmark and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 49%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +4.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -6.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 14%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
