In 2022, overseas shipments of athletic footwear decreased by -7% to X pairs, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. In 2022, Germany (X pairs) and Belgium (X pairs) were the main exporters of athletic footwear in Europe, together reaching near 53% of total exports. France (X pairs) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (6%) and Italy (5.5%). Poland (X pairs), Spain (X pairs), the UK (X pairs) and Luxembourg (X pairs) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +60.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest athletic footwear supplying countries in Europe were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 62% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Luxembourg, the UK and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +60.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per pair, falling by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per pair in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per pair), while Spain ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of athletic footwear imported in Europe rose rapidly to X pairs, picking up by 8.5% compared with 2021 figures. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, athletic footwear imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The import price in Europe stood at $X per pair in 2022, reducing by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 9%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per pair in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Netherlands ($X per pair) and Austria ($X per pair), while Spain ($X per pair) and Germany ($X per pair) were amongst the lowest.
