Avocado Market Size in Europe

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in the Europe avocado market, when its value decreased by -10.2% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Avocado Production in Europe

In value terms, avocado production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Spain (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of avocado production, accounting for 74% of total volume. Moreover, avocado production in Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Portugal (X tons), sixfold. Greece (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.7% share.

In Spain, avocado production increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Portugal (+36.3% per year) and Greece (+22.4% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of avocados in Europe fell slightly to X tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Over the period under review, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The avocado harvested area contracted to X ha in 2022, with a decrease of -6.9% compared with the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 32%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of avocados, when their volume decreased by -13.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, avocado exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) was the main exporter of avocados, constituting 55% of total exports. Spain (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by France (X tons). All these countries together held near 32% share of total exports. Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +15.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Portugal (+32.0%), Germany (+13.0%), Spain (+9.6%) and France (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +32.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of the Netherlands (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-3.4 p.p.) and Spain (-8.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest avocado supplier in Europe, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands amounted to +16.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (+11.9% per year) and France (+10.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -12.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 12%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Avocado Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, supplies from abroad of avocados decreased by -6.6% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 26%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, avocado imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 41%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main importers of avocados, together achieving 74% of total imports. The following importers - Russia (X tons), Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +27.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 54% share of total imports. Germany, the UK, Russia, Italy, Poland and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +30.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) and the UK ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
