Banana And Plantain Market Size in Europe

After six years of growth, the Europe banana and plantain market decreased by -8% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Banana And Plantain Production in Europe

In value terms, banana and plantain production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of banana and plantain production was Germany (X tons), comprising approx. 56% of total volume. Moreover, banana and plantain production in Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Spain (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Germany totaled +7.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Poland (+8.2% per year) and Spain (+1.1% per year).

In 2022, the average banana and plantain yield in Europe fell slightly to X tons per ha, waning by -3.2% compared with 2021. In general, the yield recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The banana and plantain harvested area declined to X ha in 2022, which is down by -5.5% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 74% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, overseas shipments of bananas and plantains decreased by -29.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, banana and plantain exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 40% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together constituting a 30% share of total exports. Italy (X tons), Slovenia (X tons), Spain (X tons), Russia (X tons), Greece (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to banana and plantain exports from the Netherlands stood at +20.6%. At the same time, Slovenia (+22.1%), Poland (+11.8%), Portugal (+10.8%), Greece (+7.2%), Italy (+4.4%), Russia (+3.9%), the Czech Republic (+2.6%) and Germany (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +22.1% from 2012-2022. Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.2%) and Belgium (-20.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+34 p.p.), Slovenia (+3.4 p.p.), Germany (+2.1 p.p.), Poland (+1.8 p.p.) and Italy (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -47.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest banana and plantain supplier in Europe, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 9.2% share.

In the Netherlands, banana and plantain exports expanded at an average annual rate of +20.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-1.1% per year) and France (-1.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 2.8%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of bananas and plantains, when their volume decreased by -14.7% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the six major importers of bananas and plantains, namely Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, France and Italy, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), comprising a 4.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Romania (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 33% of total imports. Russia, the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, Belgium, Romania, Portugal, Ukraine and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +12.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 3.1% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
