Barley Market Size in Europe

After two years of decline, the Europe barley market increased by 10% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Barley Production in Europe

In value terms, barley production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together accounting for 44% of total production. Spain, Ukraine, the UK, Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +5.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average barley yield reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the barley harvested area in Europe rose to X ha, picking up by 2.9% on 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 3.2% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Barley Exports

Exports in Europe

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of barley decreased by -22.9% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 46%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barley exports contracted to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, France (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the largest exporters of barley in Europe, together generating 48% of total exports. Germany (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ukraine (10%), Romania (6.4%) and the UK (4.7%). Hungary (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Germany ($X) and Russia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 62% of total exports. Romania, Ukraine, the UK and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +8.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 27%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Barley Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, imports of barley in Europe expanded remarkably to X tons, picking up by 7.3% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 15%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, barley imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +67.8% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the largest importer of barley in Europe, achieving 70% of total import. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), comprising a 6.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Portugal (X tons), Romania (X tons), Poland (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +17.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest barley importing markets in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 55% share of total imports. Spain, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Denmark, Poland, Ireland and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +18.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Portugal ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) and Ireland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
