Beer Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe beer market increased by 0.3% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 3.5%. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Beer Production in Europe

In value terms, beer production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 8.5% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Beer Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, the amount of beer exported in Europe reduced to X tons, which is down by -2.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 4.2%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beer exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total exports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) held a 5.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the UK (4.8%), Ireland (4.7%) and France (4.7%). The following exporters - Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons), Russia (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) - together made up 20% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 57% of total exports. The UK, France, the Czech Republic, Spain, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +10.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 4.6%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Beer Imports

Imports in Europe

Beer imports shrank modestly to X tons in 2022, declining by -3% against the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 7.1%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beer imports dropped to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

France (X tons), the UK (X tons), Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons), Russia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented roughly 64% of total imports in 2022. Ireland (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In terms of the main importing countries, Ireland, with a CAGR of +8.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 5.9%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
