Exports in Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of benzol (benzene), toluol (toluene) and xylol (xylenes) increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +29.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, benzol, toluol and xylol exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the key exporters of benzol (benzene), toluol (toluene) and xylol (xylenes) in 2021, accounting for near 30% and 24% of total exports, respectively. The Netherlands (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by France (9.3%), Spain (5.4%) and Austria (4.6%). Poland (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +16.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 65% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Belgium, with a CAGR of +12.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 47% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Austria ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of benzol (benzene), toluol (toluene) and xylol (xylenes) increased by 29% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, benzol, toluol and xylol imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild decline. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the main importer of benzol (benzene), toluol (toluene) and xylol (xylenes), achieving 44% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together committing a 47% share of total imports. The following importers - Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - each recorded a 5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +29.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 83% share of total imports. Spain, Italy, France and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

Among the main importing countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +26.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 54% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Spain ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
