In 2021, the Europe beryl market decreased by -1.5% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, saw a slight curtailment. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, beryl production reduced modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 7.4%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, shipments abroad of beryl decreased by -62.1% to X kg, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 225% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, beryl exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 416% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Ireland (X kg) represented the main exporter of beryl, making up 65% of total exports. Switzerland (X kg) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by France (X kg) and the UK (X kg). All these countries together took approx. 35% share of total exports.
Ireland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beryl exports, with a CAGR of +70.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Switzerland (+32.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, the UK (-12.5%) and France (-30.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ireland (+65 p.p.), Switzerland (+24 p.p.) and the UK (+4.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of France (-2.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the UK ($X) emerged as the largest beryl supplier in Europe, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Switzerland, with a 16% share.
In the UK, beryl exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+0.5% per year) and Switzerland (+32.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 142% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 366%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+44.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Beryl Imports
Imports in Europe
Beryl imports surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 166% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 450%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, beryl imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Hungary prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 83% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Romania (X kg) and Germany (X kg), together mixing up an 11% share of total imports. France (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Hungary was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beryl imports, with a CAGR of +29.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Romania (+12.9%) and Germany (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, France (-19.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hungary (+75 p.p.) and Romania (+4.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while France saw its share reduced by -14.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beryl in Europe, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Romania, with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany totaled +33.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (+8.8% per year) and Romania (+12.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -27.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 342%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+31.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
