The Europe bituminous mixtures market reached $X in 2021, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 77% of total exports in 2021. Spain (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 5.3% share, followed by Germany (4.8%). The following exporters - Belgium (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) - together made up 5.8% of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bituminous mixtures exports, with a CAGR of +71.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Spain (+20.9%), Belgium (+9.8%) and the Netherlands (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Germany (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+74 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany saw its share reduced by -5.4%, -6.6% and -29% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest bituminous mixtures supplier in Europe, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 5.7% share.

In Russia, bituminous mixtures exports expanded at an average annual rate of +57.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (+21.2% per year) and Germany (-3.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Europe

After three years of decline, purchases abroad of bituminous mixtures increased by 24% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, France (X tons) and Austria (X tons) represented the key importers of bituminous mixtures in Europe, together amounting to near 33% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.6% share, followed by Slovenia (6.3%), the UK (6.2%), Switzerland (5.7%), Portugal (4.8%) and Belgium (4.7%). The following importers - Latvia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Estonia (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +55.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest bituminous mixtures importing markets in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 31% of total imports. These countries were followed by Switzerland, Austria, Latvia, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Estonia, Portugal, Slovenia and Ireland, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Estonia, with a CAGR of +35.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
