The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany was the major exporter of black or coloured pencil leads in Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X units, which was approx. 37% of total exports in 2021. Austria (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X units), Sweden (X units), Denmark (X units) and the Czech Republic (X units). All these countries together held approx. 41% share of total exports. The following exporters - the Netherlands (X units), Poland (X units), Belgium (X units), the UK (X units), Slovakia (X units) and Italy (X units) - together made up 16% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to coloured pencil lead exports from Germany stood at +1.5%. At the same time, Poland (+53.7%), the Netherlands (+28.3%), Austria (+25.3%), Italy (+21.4%), Denmark (+16.0%), Sweden (+9.9%), Belgium (+7.2%), Slovakia (+4.2%) and France (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +53.7% from 2012-2021. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Austria (+9.7 p.p.), Denmark (+4.2 p.p.), Sweden (+3.3 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.9 p.p.), Poland (+2.9 p.p.) and Italy (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany and the UK saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -10.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest coloured pencil lead supplier in Europe, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with an 11% share.

In Germany, coloured pencil lead exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+3.4% per year) and Austria (+30.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 72%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while Denmark ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+17.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coloured pencil lead imports totaled $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +26.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the UK (X units), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X units), Germany (X units), Sweden (X units), Russia (X units), France (X units) and Poland (X units) represented the major importers of black or coloured pencil leads, together committing 75% of total imports. Belgium (X units), Romania (X units), Spain (X units), Slovakia (X units) and Austria (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +34.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 40% share of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +46.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, surging by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 16%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
