Black Printing Ink Market Size in Europe
In 2022, the Europe black printing ink market increased by 9.3% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption saw a mild slump. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe
Black printing ink exports shrank markedly to X tons in 2022, which is down by -17.2% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, black printing ink exports declined notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 43% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), the UK (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together mixing up a 38% share of total exports. France (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Spain (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Italy (-2.1%), the UK (-3.6%), France (-4.0%), the Netherlands (-4.1%) and Belgium (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Spain increased by +6.2 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 55% of total exports. France, Belgium, Spain and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
Among the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +5.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 12%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Black Printing Ink Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, black printing ink imports in Europe fell to X tons, waning by -13% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, black printing ink imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the eleven major importers of black printing ink, namely France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Russia, the UK, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Switzerland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +9.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 34% share of total imports. The Netherlands, the UK, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Austria, Russia, the Czech Republic and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.
Among the main importing countries, Belgium, with a CAGR of +4.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 44%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
