Bottled Water Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe bottled water market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Bottled Water Production in Europe

In value terms, bottled water production rose rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of bottled waters were exported in Europe; picking up by 9.3% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bottled water exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 34% of total exports. France (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Germany (17%), Italy (7.9%) and Slovenia (7.1%). Croatia (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +4.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Italy ($X) and Belgium ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 71% share of total exports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +4.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -6.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 17%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

Bottled water imports stood at X tons in 2022, picking up by 6% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the major importers of bottled waters in Europe, together generating 61% of total imports. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.7% share, followed by Belgium (7.7%) and Germany (5.7%). Slovenia (X tons) and the UK (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest bottled water importing markets in Europe were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 42% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the UK, France, Poland and Slovenia, which together accounted for a further 19%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +5.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -4.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bottled water import price increased by +22.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 28%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+17.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
