Brazil Nut Market Size in Europe
In 2021, the Europe brazil nut market decreased by -5.7% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +124.5% against 2016 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Brazil Nut Production in Europe
In value terms, brazil nut production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Spain (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of brazil nut production, comprising approx. 57% of total volume. Moreover, brazil nut production in Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Spain was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: France (+0.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+66.8% per year).

Exports in Europe
For the third year in a row, Europe recorded decline in overseas shipments of brazil nuts, which decreased by -2.7% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, brazil nut exports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the largest exporters of brazil nuts in 2021, amounting to near 37% and 29% of total exports, respectively. Spain (X tons) took a 9.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Portugal (9.5%) and Germany (8.7%). Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +67.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), the UK ($X) and Portugal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +56.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -3.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Brazil Nut Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2021, supplies from abroad of brazil nuts decreased by -30.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 11%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, brazil nut imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 43%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the four major importers of brazil nuts, namely France, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by the UK (X tons) and Portugal (X tons), together comprising a 15% share of total imports. Finland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Portugal (with a CAGR of +103.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest brazil nut importing markets in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 63% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Spain, Finland and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 28%.
Finland, with a CAGR of +90.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, brazil nut import price increased by +58.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
