In the UK, broad bean and horse bean production expanded at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Lithuania (+4.9% per year) and Germany (+14.4% per year).

In 2022, the average broad bean and horse bean yield in Europe expanded notably to X tons per ha, surging by 7% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the broad bean and horse bean yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of broad beans and horse beans (dry) in Europe reduced slightly to X ha, declining by -3.2% compared with the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to broad bean and horse bean production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Broad bean and horse bean exports soared to X tons in 2022, rising by 17% against 2021 figures. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +45.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 44%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, broad bean and horse bean exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +36.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 46%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the UK (X tons) was the major exporter of broad beans and horse beans (dry), creating 41% of total exports. Lithuania (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by France (11%), Latvia (8.8%), Germany (7.3%) and Denmark (6.7%). Poland (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from the UK increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Latvia (+78.9%), Poland (+72.6%), Lithuania (+66.6%), Denmark (+64.4%) and Germany (+30.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +78.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Lithuania, the UK, Latvia, Denmark, Germany and Poland increased by +16, +10, +8.8, +6.7, +6.5 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the largest broad bean and horse bean supplier in Europe, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lithuania ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.

In the UK, broad bean and horse bean exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lithuania (+63.2% per year) and France (-11.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 18%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of broad beans and horse beans (dry) were imported in Europe; surging by 33% against the previous year. In general, imports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, broad bean and horse bean imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Norway was the main importer of broad beans and horse beans (dry) in Europe, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 40% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together constituting a 46% share of total imports. The following importers - Belgium (X tons) and the UK (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.4% share of total imports.

Imports into Norway increased at an average annual rate of +20.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Latvia (+68.3%), the Netherlands (+48.3%), Denmark (+33.9%), Belgium (+33.5%), France (+24.6%), the UK (+23.5%) and Italy (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +68.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of the Netherlands (+11 p.p.), Denmark (+6.9 p.p.), Latvia (+5.3 p.p.), France (+3.2 p.p.) and Belgium (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Italy (-11.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Norway ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported broad beans and horse beans (dry) in Europe, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.

In Norway, broad bean and horse bean imports increased at an average annual rate of +20.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+45.0% per year) and France (+19.5% per year).
