Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of calcium carbonate decreased by -0.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, calcium carbonate exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belgium was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 33% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Norway (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Greece (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together constituting a 55% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to calcium carbonate exports from Belgium stood at -1.7%. At the same time, Croatia (+104.6%), Greece (+15.7%) and Spain (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Croatia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +104.6% from 2012-2021. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-8.6%) and Norway (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Croatia (+8.1 p.p.), Greece (+7.2 p.p.), Belgium (+3.9 p.p.) and Spain (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-8.2 p.p.) and Norway (-17.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest calcium carbonate supplier in Europe, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.6% share.
In Belgium, calcium carbonate exports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+4.0% per year) and the Netherlands (-8.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, purchases abroad of calcium carbonate increased by 7.8% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, calcium carbonate imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the major importer of calcium carbonate in Europe, achieving 73% of total import. The following importers - France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of +62.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 58% of total imports. France, Poland, Spain, Austria, Sweden, Romania and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +22.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
