Canned Food Market Size in Europe

In 2021, the Europe canned food market increased by 5.6% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 9.9%. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2021, overseas shipments of canned food decreased by -1.5% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 6%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, canned food exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons) were the largest exporters of canned food, together creating 75% of total exports. The following exporters - Hungary (X tons), Greece (X tons), Russia (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and the UK (X tons) - together made up 15% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +17.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 39% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, France, Poland, Belgium, Ireland, Greece, Denmark, Hungary, the UK and Russia, which together accounted for a further 49%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +11.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 7.2% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of canned food decreased by -3.4% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 4.7%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, canned food imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 6.5%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons) and the UK (X tons) represented the main importers of canned food in 2021, reaching near 17% and 16% of total imports, respectively. France (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (8%), Belgium (6.4%) and Russia (5.3%). Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Poland (X tons), Romania (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +9.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 42% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Russia, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Austria and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +12.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
