Canned Meat Market Size in Europe

In 2021, the Europe canned meat market decreased by -15.6% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, consumption recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 7.2%. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned meat production declined dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 8.7%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of canned meat increased by 8.7% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, canned meat exports rose notably to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of canned meat, namely Germany, Poland and the Netherlands, represented more than third of total export. Denmark (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 7.2% share, followed by Belgium (6.9%), France (5.6%), Ireland (5.4%) and Spain (4.6%). The following exporters - Italy (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Austria (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 13% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +11.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest canned meat supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 44% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +13.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 3.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 7.8%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of canned meat decreased by -1.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned meat imports rose to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 7% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2021, the UK (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the major importers of canned meat, together mixing up 61% of total imports. Denmark (X tons), Spain (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Austria (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Poland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to canned meat imports into the UK stood at -2.5%. At the same time, Romania (+14.2%), Poland (+10.9%), France (+5.2%), Denmark (+4.3%), Austria (+2.1%) and Belgium (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +14.2% from 2012-2021. Spain and Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-2.0%), the Netherlands (-2.8%), Ireland (-3.7%) and Germany (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of France (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-2.3 p.p.), Germany (-4.1 p.p.) and the UK (-4.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the UK ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported canned meat in Europe, comprising 24% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the UK stood at -2.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-1.3% per year) and the Netherlands (-0.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
