Carbides Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe carbides market increased by 5.6% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Carbides Production in Europe

In value terms, carbides production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 6.2%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, carbides exports in Europe reduced to X tons, shrinking by -10.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbides exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 38%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of carbides in Europe, making up 66% of total export. Sweden (X tons) held a 6.5% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (4.8%). Belgium (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +11.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest carbides supplier in Europe, comprising 28% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany stood at +8.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Slovakia (+4.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-2.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 31% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

Carbides imports dropped slightly to X tons in 2022, flattening at 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbides imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) was the major importer of carbides, generating 30% of total imports. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Russia (X tons), Norway (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together constituting a 51% share of total imports.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of carbides. At the same time, Spain (+14.5%), Russia (+10.5%) and Norway (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2022. France, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+3.4 p.p.) and Russia (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carbides in Europe, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+1.8% per year) and Italy (+3.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
