The Europe carbon dioxide market dropped dramatically to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -85.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a abrupt contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe
In 2022, the amount of carbon dioxide exported in Europe totaled X tons, growing by 3.1% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
In value terms, carbon dioxide exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by Norway (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and North Macedonia (X tons) were the major exporters of carbon dioxide, together comprising 68% of total exports. The Czech Republic (X tons), France (X tons), Serbia (X tons), Germany (X tons), Austria (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Spain (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +15.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest carbon dioxide supplier in Europe, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 6.6% share.
In the Netherlands, carbon dioxide exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+10.2% per year) and Sweden (+14.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe
In 2022, overseas purchases of carbon dioxide increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after three years of decline. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +85.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, carbon dioxide imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +85.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 23%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented roughly 47% of total imports in 2022. Portugal (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Switzerland (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 13% share of total imports. Austria (X tons), Italy (X tons), Romania (X tons), Denmark (X tons), France (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +51.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), the UK ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 33% of total imports. Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, Austria, Portugal, Romania and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +11.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -13.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
