Carbonate Market Size in Europe
In 2021, the Europe carbonate market increased by 0.6% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Carbonate Production in Europe
In value terms, carbonate production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 6.4% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, shipments abroad of carbonates and peroxocarbonates increased by 14% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, carbonate exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the nine major exporters of carbonates and peroxocarbonates, namely Germany, Bulgaria, Belgium, Russia, Spain, the Netherlands, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France and Poland, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +16.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest carbonate supplier in Europe, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany stood at +5.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+1.8% per year) and Spain (+16.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+9.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of carbonates and peroxocarbonates increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, carbonate imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of carbonate imports in 2021 were the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons), together accounting for 65% of total import. The UK (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Poland (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Romania (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +22.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 34% share of total imports. France, Italy, Spain, the UK, Poland, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Portugal, Belarus and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +12.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
