Over the period under review, consumption recorded a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Trailer And Semi-Trailer Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, trailer and semi-trailer exports in Europe reduced to X units, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 30%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X units), distantly followed by Germany (X units), the Netherlands (X units), the UK (X units) and Belgium (X units) represented the largest exporters of cargo trailers and semi-trailers, together generating 66% of total exports. Russia (X units), France (X units), Estonia (X units), Slovakia (X units), Denmark (X units), Lithuania (X units), Italy (X units) and the Czech Republic (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +29.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest trailer and semi-trailer supplier in Europe, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany totaled +2.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+9.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+8.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 7.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 12%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while Slovakia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Trailer And Semi-Trailer Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, the amount of cargo trailers and semi-trailers imported in Europe reached X units, rising by 10% compared with 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +37.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +46.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the UK (X units) represented the main importer of cargo trailers and semi-trailers, constituting 26% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X units), France (X units) and Poland (X units), together achieving a 20% share of total imports. Greece (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Sweden (X units), Denmark (X units), Lithuania (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Romania (X units), Spain (X units) and Italy (X units) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to trailer and semi-trailer imports into the UK stood at +10.9%. At the same time, Greece (+11.7%), Germany (+11.0%), France (+9.7%), Italy (+9.3%), Romania (+7.5%), the Netherlands (+7.4%), Denmark (+6.3%), the Czech Republic (+4.2%), Lithuania (+3.1%), Poland (+3.0%) and Sweden (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +11.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Spain (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the UK (+10 p.p.), Germany (+3.4 p.p.), Greece (+1.9 p.p.) and France (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Spain (-2.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 29% of total imports. France, the UK, Italy, Denmark, Lithuania, Sweden, Romania, the Czech Republic, Spain and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +14.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per unit in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Greece ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
