Carrot And Turnip Market Size in Europe

The Europe carrot and turnip market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, which is down by -1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a slight descent. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Carrot And Turnip Production in Europe

In value terms, carrot and turnip production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 11%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together accounting for 36% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +4.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average carrot and turnip yield contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, falling by -2% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The carrot and turnip harvested area dropped to X ha in 2022, leveling off at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to carrot and turnip production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of carrots and turnips, when their volume decreased by -10.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, carrot and turnip exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 40%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands represented the main exporter of carrots and turnips in Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 37% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons), together achieving a 44% share of total exports. Poland (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to carrot and turnip exports from the Netherlands stood at -1.2%. At the same time, Belarus (+20.9%), Poland (+7.7%) and Spain (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012-2022. Belgium and Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belarus, Poland and Spain increased by +9.7, +2 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest carrot and turnip supplier in Europe, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (+2.1% per year) and Belgium (-0.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 29%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Carrot And Turnip Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, imports of carrots and turnips in Europe declined to X tons, with a decrease of -7.3% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carrot and turnip imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of carrots and turnips, namely Belgium, Germany, Russia and France, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), committing a 4.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Romania (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Portugal (X tons), the UK (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) - together made up 22% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ukraine (with a CAGR of +38.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carrot and turnip importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Russia ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports. Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK, Ukraine, Romania, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Ireland and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Among the main importing countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +37.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 24%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
