After three years of decline, the Europe cashew nut market increased by 1,552% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Cashew Nut Production in Europe

In value terms, cashew nut production fell remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 455% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

The country with the largest volume of cashew nut production was the Netherlands (X tons), comprising approx. 95% of total volume. It was followed by Portugal (X tons), with a 2.5% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in the Netherlands stood at +76.8%.

Exports in Europe

In 2021, cashew nut exports in Europe declined to X tons, reducing by -14.6% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,452% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, cashew nut exports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 847% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2021. The UK (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cashew nuts exports, with a CAGR of +58.1% from 2012 to 2021. The UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The Netherlands (+76 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the UK saw its share reduced by -17.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest cashew nut supplier in Europe, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 1.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands amounted to +48.5%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the UK amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+2.7%).

Cashew Nut Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of cashew nuts was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a deep downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belgium (X tons) and the UK (X tons) represented the largest importers of cashew nuts in 2021, reaching approx. 27% and 23% of total imports, respectively. Denmark (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Italy (8.2%) and the Netherlands (7.4%). The following importers - France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Finland (X tons), Norway (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Portugal (with a CAGR of +36.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cashew nuts in Europe, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belgium totaled +13.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-5.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+0.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
