Cassava Market Size in Europe
The Europe cassava market soared to $X in 2022, surging by 20% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +84.6% against 2015 indices. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Cassava Production in Europe
In value terms, cassava production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 9.7% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The Netherlands (X tons) remains the largest cassava producing country in Europe, accounting for 92% of total volume. Moreover, cassava production in the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Belgium (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in the Netherlands was relatively modest.
Cassava Exports
Exports in Europe
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of cassava, when their volume decreased by -30.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, posted tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 74%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.
In value terms, cassava exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 73%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons) and France (X tons), together creating an 18% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) - each finished at a 5.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cassava exports from the Netherlands stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Spain (+34.3%), France (+16.9%) and Portugal (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +34.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Italy (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+12 p.p.) and France (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Italy saw its share reduced by -3.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest cassava supplier in Europe, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 5.9% share.
In the Netherlands, cassava exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+34.1% per year) and France (+18.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cassava Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, purchases abroad of cassava decreased by -6.3% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 29%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, cassava imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 18%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 47% of total imports. Spain (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons) and the UK (X tons). All these countries together held near 38% share of total imports. The following importers - Italy (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.
The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cassava imports, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Portugal (+6.6%), the UK (+5.8%), France (+5.8%), Italy (+2.7%), Belgium (+1.7%) and Spain (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of the Netherlands (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-1.6 p.p.) and Spain (-8.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cassava in Europe, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands stood at +11.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (+5.7% per year) and France (+6.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
