Over the period under review, exports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 12%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany was the largest exporter of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) in Europe, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 66% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Norway (X tons) and Austria (X tons), together making up a 30% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sulphite wood pulp exports from Germany stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Norway (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Norway emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +7.2% from 2012-2021. In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest sulphite wood pulp supplier in Europe, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 5% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 3.7% share.
In Germany, sulphite wood pulp exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-11.6% per year) and Austria (-11.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 18% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Sulphite wood pulp imports stood at X tons in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) represented the main importer of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades), constituting 30% of total imports. Austria (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (11%), Sweden (9.7%), Slovakia (7.4%) and Slovenia (6%). France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Norway (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sulphite wood pulp imports into Germany stood at -6.1%. At the same time, Sweden (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sweden emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +5.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Netherlands (-4.0%), Slovakia (-5.0%), Austria (-6.9%), Slovenia (-7.1%), Italy (-10.3%), Norway (-10.9%), France (-14.3%) and Belgium (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sweden, Germany, Slovakia, Austria and the Netherlands increased by +7, +6.6, +2.2, +1.7 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) in Europe, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a 9.2% share.
In Germany, sulphite wood pulp imports contracted by an average annual rate of -5.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-6.5% per year) and Austria (-4.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
