The country with the largest volume of chicken meat production was Russia (X tons), accounting for 24% of total volume. Moreover, chicken meat production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Poland (X tons), twofold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.5% share.
In Russia, chicken meat production increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Poland (+4.5% per year) and the UK (+3.3% per year).
In 2021, the average chicken meat yield in Europe stood at X kg per head, approximately mirroring 2020. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the chicken meat yield hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production in Europe shrank slightly to X heads, waning by -1.9% compared with the previous year. This number increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the number of producing animals increased by 4%. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of chicken meat, when their volume decreased by -1.8% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
In value terms, chicken meat exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 17%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented roughly 43% of total exports in 2021. Belgium (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Ukraine (X tons), the UK (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Russia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 32% share of total exports. The following exporters - France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) - together made up 17% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +30.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest chicken meat supplying countries in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 56% of total exports. Ukraine, Germany, Russia, France, Spain, Belarus, the UK, Hungary, Italy and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Russia, with a CAGR of +35.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight contraction. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of chicken meat imported in Europe rose markedly to X tons, picking up by 5.9% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 6.2%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, chicken meat imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of chicken meat imports in 2021 were the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together finishing at 65% of total import. Ukraine (X tons), Romania (X tons), Spain (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +7.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest chicken meat importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 44% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 36%.
Hungary, with a CAGR of +16.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 9.7%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
