Chicory Market Size in Europe

For the third consecutive year, the Europe chicory market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by less than 0.1% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, recorded a deep setback. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Chicory Production in Europe

In value terms, chicory production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a sharp decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 65% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of chicory production was Belgium (X tons), comprising approx. 69% of total volume. Moreover, chicory production in Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Netherlands (X tons), sixfold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Belgium amounted to +3.4%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the Netherlands (+0.3% per year) and France (-10.9% per year).

In 2021, the average chicory yield in Europe fell slightly to X tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2020. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020, and then fell in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The chicory harvested area amounted to X ha in 2021, rising by 1.7% compared with 2020 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 9.3%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Chicory Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of chicory were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 361% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicory exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 189% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) was the major exporter of chicory, achieving 50% of total exports. Hungary (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belgium (15%), France (9.1%) and Poland (6.9%). Germany (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +18.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+924.9%), Belgium (+345.0%), Poland (+53.4%), France (+29.0%) and Germany (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +924.9% from 2012-2021. While the share of Hungary (+17 p.p.), Belgium (+15 p.p.), Poland (+5.9 p.p.) and France (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Germany (-3.4 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-20.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Hungary ($X) and Belgium ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 88% share of total exports.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +669.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (-4.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Chicory Imports

Imports in Europe

For the third year in a row, Europe recorded growth in purchases abroad of chicory, which increased by 19% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, chicory imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons), distantly followed by the UK (X tons), Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main importers of chicory, together constituting 88% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +320.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chicory importing markets in Europe were Russia ($X), Spain ($X) and the UK ($X), with a combined 43% share of total imports. Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +190.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
