Chocolate And Confectionery Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe chocolate and confectionery market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Chocolate And Confectionery Production in Europe

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 5.7% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Chocolate And Confectionery Exports

Exports in Europe

After six years of growth, overseas shipments of chocolate and confectionery decreased by -0.5% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 13%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the largest exporters of chocolate and confectionery in 2022, amounting to near 21% and 19% of total exports, respectively. Belgium (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 9.9% share, followed by France (7.9%), Poland (7.5%), Italy (6.8%) and Russia (5%). Spain (X tons), the UK (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Austria (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chocolate and confectionery supplying countries in Europe were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 49% share of total exports. Italy, Poland, France, the UK, Switzerland, Spain, Russia and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +7.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chocolate And Confectionery Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of chocolate and confectionery were imported in Europe; increasing by 2.3% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 10% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The purchases of the nine major importers of chocolate and confectionery, namely Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Russia and Italy, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The following importers - the Czech Republic (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - each amounted to a 7.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chocolate and confectionery importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 38% of total imports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Italy, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Austria, the Czech Republic and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

Among the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +9.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Austria ($X per ton) and Sweden ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
