In 2021, overseas shipments of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages decreased by -0.6% to X litres for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X litres in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
In value terms, cider, perry and mead exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages, namely Sweden, Italy and Germany, represented more than third of total export. Belgium (X litres) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 7.3% share, followed by France (5.4%), the Netherlands (5.3%), Austria (5.3%) and the UK (5.2%). Lithuania (X litres), Denmark (X litres), Poland (X litres), Estonia (X litres) and Hungary (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +18.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest cider, perry and mead supplier in Europe, comprising 24% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.6% share.
In Italy, cider, perry and mead exports increased at an average annual rate of +17.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sweden (-2.0% per year) and Germany (+4.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per litre in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per litre), while Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe
Cider, perry and mead imports rose modestly to X litres in 2021, growing by 2.8% against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the UK (X litres) was the main importer of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages, generating 30% of total imports. Germany (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.2% share, followed by Russia (6.8%) and the Czech Republic (5.3%). The following importers - the Netherlands (X litres), Spain (X litres), Lithuania (X litres), Latvia (X litres), Romania (X litres), Ukraine (X litres), Italy (X litres), France (X litres) and Hungary (X litres) - together made up 28% of total imports.
The UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages. At the same time, Ukraine (+43.8%), Romania (+33.9%), the Netherlands (+12.6%), Hungary (+10.1%), Spain (+7.8%), Latvia (+6.6%), the Czech Republic (+5.2%), Russia (+5.0%), Italy (+1.7%) and France (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +43.8% from 2012-2021. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lithuania (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Romania, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Spain and Russia increased by +2.8, +2.6, +2.5, +1.6 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the UK ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages in Europe, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the UK stood at -1.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+3.8% per year) and Germany (-1.4% per year).

The import price in Europe stood at $X per litre in 2021, rising by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild decline. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
