The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +21.0% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

Over the period under review, production posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 3,502%. The level of production peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), with a combined 100% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of fibres, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +1,686.5%), while fibres for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, when their volume decreased by -17.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 46%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented the key exporters of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Europe, together mixing up 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), constituting a 10% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +26.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and Belgium ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 83% share of total exports.

Spain, with a CAGR of +21.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -6.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -38.8% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 33%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the UK (X tons) was the key importer of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, comprising 32% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons). All these countries together took near 40% share of total imports. Russia (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Slovenia (X tons), Italy (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre imports into the UK stood at +6.6%. At the same time, Belarus (+79.7%), Belgium (+13.4%), France (+10.8%), Ireland (+4.6%), Italy (+3.3%), Portugal (+3.1%), Russia (+2.9%) and Germany (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +79.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Slovenia (-1.5%), the Netherlands (-1.5%) and Poland (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The UK (+12 p.p.), Belgium (+5.5 p.p.), France (+3.1 p.p.) and Belarus (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -5.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the UK ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Europe, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.1% share.

In the UK, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+5.6% per year) and Germany (+2.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
