Coconut Market Size in Europe

The Europe coconut market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -12.9% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Coconut Production in Europe

In value terms, coconut production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a perceptible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 228% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were France (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +25.5%).

The average coconut yield totaled X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 14% compared with the year before. In general, the yield showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 541%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the coconut yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of coconuts were harvested in Europe; therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to coconut production attained the maximum at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of coconuts, when their volume decreased by -17.9% to X tons. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 104%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coconut exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the major exporter of coconuts, comprising 71% of total exports. Spain (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by France (5.7%). Germany (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, France (+7.8%) and Spain (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +7.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-7.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+7 p.p.), France (+2.6 p.p.) and Spain (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Germany (-2.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 88% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +11.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 61% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Coconut Imports

Imports in Europe

Coconut imports dropped remarkably to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -16.8% on 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 21%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coconut imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by the UK (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the major importers of coconuts, together constituting 87% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +13.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest coconut importing markets in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), the UK ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 47% of total imports. Spain, Italy, France and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +12.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
