Green Coffee Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe green coffee market increased by 28% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, green coffee production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate significant growth. As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

North Macedonia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of green coffee production, comprising approx. 91% of total volume. Moreover, green coffee production in North Macedonia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Estonia (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in North Macedonia amounted to -4.4%.

Green Coffee Exports

Exports in Europe

After four years of growth, shipments abroad of coffee (green) decreased by -26.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, green coffee exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons) represented the major exporter of coffee (green), achieving 50% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the UK (X tons). All these countries together took near 37% share of total exports. Finland (X tons) and Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of coffee (green). At the same time, Finland (+22.9%), the Netherlands (+20.8%), Spain (+18.4%) and the UK (+15.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +22.9% from 2012-2022. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+13 p.p.), Spain (+7.4 p.p.), Germany (+4.6 p.p.), the UK (+4.4 p.p.) and Finland (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -33.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) emerged as the largest green coffee supplier in Europe, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 8.9% share.

In Germany, green coffee exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+22.6% per year) and Belgium (-14.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 30% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Green Coffee Imports

Imports in Europe

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of coffee (green) decreased by -1.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, green coffee imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), Russia (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and the UK (X tons) represented the main importers of coffee (green), together generating 80% of total imports. Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +10.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green coffee importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Switzerland ($X), with a combined 51% share of total imports. The Netherlands, France, Spain, the UK, Belgium, Sweden, Russia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +10.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
