Couscous Market Size in Europe

The Europe couscous market reached $X in 2021, rising by 4.5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Couscous Production in Europe

In value terms, couscous production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of couscous decreased by -5.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, couscous exports contracted to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Italy was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 57% of total exports. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), committing a 30% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) - together made up 5.7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), France ($X) and Belgium ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 83% share of total exports. Germany lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 4.4%.

Among the main exporting countries, Germany, with a CAGR of +11.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Couscous Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of couscous decreased by -6.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +22.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, couscous imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +87.0% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

France represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 32% of total imports. The UK (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 40% share of total imports. Russia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), Poland (X tons), Switzerland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into France increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ukraine (+45.8%), Russia (+27.8%), Poland (+20.9%), Germany (+13.1%), Spain (+7.9%), Italy (+7.9%), the Czech Republic (+7.9%), the Netherlands (+7.9%), the UK (+7.3%), Switzerland (+5.8%), Belgium (+5.4%) and Austria (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +45.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Germany, Russia, Ukraine and Poland increased by +3.1, +3, +2.7 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported couscous in Europe, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with an 8.1% share.

In France, couscous imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+6.3% per year) and the UK (+5.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 12%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
