After two years of growth, the Europe cotton-seed oil market decreased by -5.4% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Cotton-Seed Oil Production in Europe
In value terms, cotton-seed oil production declined modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a mild setback. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, the amount of crude cotton-seed oil exported in Europe skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 16% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 78%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cotton-seed oil exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Greece (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) represented roughly 83% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), creating a 14% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Greece (with a CAGR of +81.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cotton-seed oil supplying countries in Europe were Greece ($X), France ($X) and Ukraine ($X), together comprising 92% of total exports.
Greece, with a CAGR of +80.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 51%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (-0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Cotton-Seed Oil Imports
Imports in Europe
After three years of decline, purchases abroad of crude cotton-seed oil increased by 61% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cotton-seed oil imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 80%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the UK (X tons) represented the key importer of crude cotton-seed oil, comprising 40% of total imports. Poland (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons) and Ireland (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 52% share of total imports. Russia (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +63.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cotton-seed oil importing markets in Europe were the UK ($X), Belgium ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 85% of total imports.
The UK, with a CAGR of +90.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -6.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, cotton-seed oil import price increased by +77.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+16.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
