Crude Glycerol Market Size in Europe

The total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -5.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Europe

Crude glycerol exports shrank slightly to X tons in 2021, approximately reflecting 2020. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, crude glycerol exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +79.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented roughly 41% of total exports in 2021. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Poland (5.4%), Portugal (5.1%), Belgium (4.8%) and the Netherlands (4.6%). Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons), Romania (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +60.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Spain ($X) and France ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 48% of total exports. Poland, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, Romania, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +85.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 70% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+15.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, approx. X tons of crude glycerol, glycerine waters and lyes were imported in Europe; surging by 8.5% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, crude glycerol imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +68.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the key importer of crude glycerol, glycerine waters and lyes, making up 33% of total imports. Germany (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Denmark (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 47% share of total imports. Italy (X tons), the UK (X tons), Ukraine (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons) and France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to crude glycerol imports into the Netherlands stood at +3.8%. At the same time, Russia (+60.6%), France (+24.7%), Poland (+20.4%), Denmark (+15.9%), the UK (+9.8%), Belgium (+6.8%) and Ukraine (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +60.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-2.2%), Italy (-3.0%) and the Czech Republic (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+10 p.p.), Denmark (+6.3 p.p.) and Belgium (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the Czech Republic, Italy and Germany saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -3.6% and -11.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Denmark ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 53% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, the UK, Belgium, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and France, which together accounted for a further 40%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +43.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 36% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
