Dried Onion Market Size in Europe

After four years of growth, the Europe dried onion market decreased by -11.6% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Dried Onion Production in Europe

In value terms, dried onion production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +59.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of dried onions decreased by -2.4% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried onion exports totaled $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Spain (X tons) was the main exporter of dried onions, comprising 38% of total exports. France (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Germany (15%), Belgium (8.2%), the Netherlands (8%) and Hungary (4.6%).

Spain was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried onions exports, with a CAGR of +13.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hungary (+12.7%) and Belgium (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany and the Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+24 p.p.) and Hungary (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Netherlands, Germany and France saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -2.2% and -5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 63% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Belgium and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +9.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of dried onions, when their volume decreased by -2.6% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, dried onion imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 20%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by the UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the largest importers of dried onions, together generating 71% of total imports. Sweden (X tons), Hungary (X tons), France (X tons) and Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Hungary (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 48% of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Russia, Poland, Spain, Hungary, France, Sweden and Austria, which together accounted for a further 34%.

Among the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +10.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 10%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
