In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Europe dried or salted fish market, when its value increased by 6% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight decline. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried or salted fish exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 7.6%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Norway (X tons), distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Iceland (X tons), Spain (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the key exporters of dried or salted fish, together comprising 83% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +22.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Norway ($X), Sweden ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 63% of total exports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +30.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Iceland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Dried Or Salted Fish

Imports in Europe

In 2021, purchases abroad of dried or salted fish increased by 4.2% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 11%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried or salted fish imports stood at $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 7.4%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Portugal (X tons), distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) represented the major importers of dried or salted fish, together making up 81% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ukraine (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest dried or salted fish importing markets in Europe were Portugal ($X), Sweden ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 58% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Spain, Germany and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 27%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +27.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
