Dry Bean Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe dry bean market decreased by -0.1% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Dry Bean Production in Europe

In value terms, dry bean production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -12.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Lithuania (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Latvia (X tons), together accounting for 66% of total production. Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Serbia, Albania, Spain and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Estonia (with a CAGR of +50.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average dry bean yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. The yield indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, dry bean yield decreased by -0.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 26%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of beans (dry) production in Europe dropped slightly to X ha, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to dry bean production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, shipments abroad of beans (dry) decreased by -10.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dry bean exports dropped to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -16.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) represented roughly 30% of total exports in 2022. It was followed by the UK (X tons), Poland (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Portugal (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together mixing up a 50% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest dry bean supplier in Europe, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with an 8.8% share.

In the Netherlands, dry bean exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+6.1% per year) and France (+1.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, approx. X tons of beans (dry) were imported in Europe; shrinking by -5.6% compared with 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 16%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dry bean imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 26%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons) and the UK (X tons) represented roughly 38% of total imports in 2022. Spain (X tons) took an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (7.5%), France (6%), Portugal (5.9%) and Romania (5.3%). Russia (X tons), Greece (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the largest dry bean importing markets in Europe were Italy ($X), the UK ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 44% of total imports. The Netherlands, France, Portugal, Romania, Greece, Germany, Russia, Belgium, Serbia and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +8.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
