Market Size for Duck and Goose Meat in Europe

In 2022, the Europe duck and goose meat market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Duck and Goose Meat in Europe

In value terms, duck and goose meat production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

France (X tons) remains the largest duck and goose meat producing country in Europe, comprising approx. 36% of total volume. Moreover, duck and goose meat production in France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hungary (X tons), twofold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 14% share.

In France, duck and goose meat production shrank by an average annual rate of -4.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (-0.1% per year) and Poland (+4.7% per year).

The average duck and goose meat yield was estimated at X kg per head in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 2.6%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure.

The global number of animals slaughtered for duck and goose meat production totaled X heads in 2022, picking up by 4.5% against the year before. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the amount of animals produced reached the peak level of X heads. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of this number remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports of Duck and Goose Meat

Exports in Europe

Duck and goose meat exports fell to X tons in 2022, which is down by -8.4% compared with the year before. In general, exports showed a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, duck and goose meat exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) represented roughly 55% of total exports in 2022. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by the Netherlands (12%) and Bulgaria (9.3%). The following exporters - Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) - together made up 5.6% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +9.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), Hungary ($X) and France ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 67% of total exports.

Poland, with a CAGR of +8.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Duck and Goose Meat

Imports in Europe

In 2022, duck and goose meat imports in Europe declined to X tons, with a decrease of -4.6% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, duck and goose meat imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by the UK (X tons), France (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the key importers of duck and goose meat, together comprising 73% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Austria (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Romania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +7.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest duck and goose meat importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 58% of total imports. Belgium, Spain, the Czech Republic, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Italy and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +14.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 24% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
