Ethanol Market Size in Europe

The Europe ethanol market surged to $X in 2022, picking up by 44% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Ethanol Production in Europe

In value terms, ethanol production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 12%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Europe

In 2022, the amount of ethyl alcohol exported in Europe amounted to X litres, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -0.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X litres in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, ethanol exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 29%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands was the main exporting country with an export of around X litres, which resulted at 31% of total exports. Hungary (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by France (10%), Belgium (9.5%), Germany (8.2%), Spain (5.6%) and Poland (4.5%).

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+25.9%), Hungary (+9.8%), Spain (+7.7%), Germany (+7.5%) and Belgium (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +25.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands, Poland and Hungary increased by +11, +3.8 and +3.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest ethanol supplier in Europe, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 10% share.

In the Netherlands, ethanol exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-2.4% per year) and Hungary (+13.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per litre in 2022, with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Poland ($X per litre) and Spain ($X per litre), while Hungary ($X per litre) and Germany ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X litres of ethyl alcohol were imported in Europe; increasing by 24% against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +76.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 25%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, ethanol imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X litres), distantly followed by Germany (X litres), the UK (X litres), France (X litres) and Sweden (X litres) were the key importers of ethyl alcohol, together making up 70% of total imports. The following importers - Belgium (X litres), Italy (X litres), Denmark (X litres), Greece (X litres), Spain (X litres), Romania (X litres), Poland (X litres) and Finland (X litres) - together made up 21% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +21.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Sweden, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Denmark, Romania, Spain, Finland and Poland, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Among the main importing countries, Greece, with a CAGR of +25.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per litre in 2022, jumping by 24% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ethanol import price increased by +64.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Greece ($X per litre) and Finland ($X per litre), while Belgium ($X per litre) and Italy ($X per litre) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
