The Europe fish parts market fell to $X in 2022, waning by -6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a strong expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fish parts production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, shipments abroad of fish heads, tails and maws increased by 3% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 55%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, fish parts exports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 117%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Norway (X tons) and Iceland (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together comprising 75% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 9.4% share, followed by Portugal (5.6%). The following exporters - Poland (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +183.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Iceland ($X) remains the largest fish parts supplier in Europe, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4.6% share.
In Iceland, fish parts exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (+2.1% per year) and Belarus (+146.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iceland (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Fish Parts Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, supplies from abroad of fish heads, tails and maws decreased by -23.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 99%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, fish parts imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 31%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 43% of total imports. Portugal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Denmark (X tons) and Belgium (X tons). All these countries together took near 38% share of total imports. Spain (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +55.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Belgium ($X) and Portugal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 58% of total imports. Denmark, Spain, Latvia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +59.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, waning by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
