Bulgaria was the largest exporter of flexographic printing machinery in Europe, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was approx. 53% of total exports in 2022. Imports in Europe
In 2022, the amount of flexographic printing machinery imported in Europe fell to X units, with a decrease of -9% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -34.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands represented the largest importer of flexographic printing machinery in Europe, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was near 37% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Italy (X units), Spain (X units), the UK (X units), Greece (X units) and Finland (X units), together achieving a 42% share of total imports. France (X units), Slovakia (X units), Russia (X units) and Iceland (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iceland (+37.8%), Greece (+28.9%), Italy (+20.3%), Finland (+17.1%), Spain (+6.1%) and Slovakia (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iceland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-3.1%), Russia (-3.4%) and the UK (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+11 p.p.), Greece (+5.9 p.p.), Finland (+3.3 p.p.), Spain (+2.4 p.p.) and Iceland (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia, France and the UK saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -2.7% and -16.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest flexographic printing machinery importing markets in Europe were France ($X), Italy ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined 33% share of total imports. The UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Finland, Greece, Slovakia and Iceland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Finland, with a CAGR of +23.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while Iceland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
