In 2021, after six years of growth, there was decline in the Europe fish meals and pellet market, when its value decreased by -2.3% to $X. The total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +87.4% against 2014 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Production of Flours, Meals And Pellets Of Fish in Europe
In value terms, fish meals and pellet production rose rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 38%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Europe
In 2021, shipments abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 43%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Latvia (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) were the largest exporters of flours, meals and pellets of fish in Europe, together comprising 44% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Norway (10%), Belarus (9.1%) and Sweden (5.4%). Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons), Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Finland (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +29.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the largest fish meals and pellet supplier in Europe, comprising 25% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Finland, with an 8.1% share.
In Denmark, fish meals and pellet exports plunged by an average annual rate of -8.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-1.1% per year) and Finland (+24.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -12.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Flours, Meals And Pellets Of Fish
Imports in Europe
After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish decreased by -19.7% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +41.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 71%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 42%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of fish meals and pellet imports in 2021 were the UK (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Germany (X tons), Russia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), together accounting for 82% of total import. Greece (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +25.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest fish meals and pellet importing markets in Europe were the UK ($X), Denmark ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports.
The UK, with a CAGR of +24.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted a temperate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+6.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
