In 2022, overseas shipments of waterproof footwear decreased by -5.3% to X pairs for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X pairs, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, waterproof footwear exports dropped to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Italy was the largest exporter of waterproof footwear in Europe, with the volume of exports accounting for X pairs, which was approx. 26% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X pairs) held an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (7.4%), Germany (7.1%), France (6.5%), Portugal (5.7%), the Netherlands (5.6%) and Malta (4.8%). Spain (X pairs), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X pairs), Greece (X pairs), Lithuania (X pairs) and Denmark (X pairs) took a little share of total exports.
Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of waterproof footwear. At the same time, Malta (+227.6%), Greece (+17.4%), Poland (+14.2%), Spain (+6.6%), Germany (+5.4%), Portugal (+5.3%), the Netherlands (+4.0%), Lithuania (+3.5%) and Denmark (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malta emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +227.6% from 2012-2022. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-3.5%) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+5.2 p.p.), Malta (+4.8 p.p.), Germany (+2.3 p.p.), Greece (+1.9 p.p.), Portugal (+1.8 p.p.) and Spain (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina and France saw its share reduced by -2.3%, -3.1% and -4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest waterproof footwear supplier in Europe, comprising 23% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy totaled +1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-1.7% per year) and Germany (+8.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per pair, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 7.9%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per pair), while Malta ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bosnia and Herzegovina (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Waterproof Footwear Imports
Imports in Europe
In 2022, supplies from abroad of waterproof footwear increased by 4% to X pairs, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, waterproof footwear imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +52.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the four major importers of waterproof footwear, namely Italy, Germany, France and the UK, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X pairs), mixing up a 5.3% share of total imports. The following importers - Poland (X pairs), Sweden (X pairs), Denmark (X pairs), Spain (X pairs), Greece (X pairs), the Czech Republic (X pairs), Belgium (X pairs) and Russia (X pairs) - together made up 23% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +12.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 41% share of total imports. France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Russia and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +14.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per pair, picking up by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 7.3%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per pair), while Greece ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
