In 2021, the Europe fresh or chilled anchovies market increased by 11% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh or chilled anchovies production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of fresh or chilled anchovieses was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh or chilled anchovies exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Portugal (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented roughly 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Croatia (X tons), creating a 9.7% share of total exports. France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +40.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest fresh or chilled anchovies supplying countries in Europe were Portugal ($X), Spain ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 89% share of total exports.

Portugal, with a CAGR of +30.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+6.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Europe

In 2021, supplies from abroad of fresh or chilled anchovieses was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 43%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh or chilled anchovies imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Spain (X tons) was the key importer of fresh or chilled anchovieses, creating 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Albania (X tons), Germany (X tons), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) and France (X tons), together generating a 49% share of total imports.

Imports into Spain decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Croatia (+51.4%), Albania (+31.3%), Germany (+15.2%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (+13.3%) and France (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Croatia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +51.4% from 2012-2021. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Croatia (+8.6 p.p.), Albania (+5.1 p.p.), Germany (+4 p.p.), Bosnia and Herzegovina (+3.6 p.p.), France (+2.4 p.p.) and Italy (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Spain saw its share reduced by -26.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Spain ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Among the main importing countries, Croatia, with a CAGR of +40.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Albania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
