Fresh Pork Cut Market Size in Europe

After two years of decline, the Europe fresh pork cut market increased by 2.3% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Fresh Pork Cut Production in Europe

In value terms, fresh pork cut production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 21%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Denmark (X tons), with a combined 50% share of total production. These countries were followed by Italy, France, Poland, the Netherlands and the UK, which together accounted for a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +2.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Fresh Pork Cut Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, fresh pork cut exports in Europe shrank modestly to X tons, declining by -4.4% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 5.1%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh pork cut exports rose to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Denmark (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented roughly 81% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), comprising a 4.9% share of total exports. Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of -1.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest fresh pork cut supplying countries in Europe were Denmark ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X), together comprising 65% of total exports.

Spain, with a CAGR of -2.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 16%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Poland ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) and Denmark ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports in Europe

In 2022, the amount of fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat imported in Europe fell slightly to X tons, declining by -1.5% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 6.4%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh pork cut imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy was the major importer of fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat in Europe, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons) and the UK (X tons). All these countries together took near 28% share of total imports. France (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat. At the same time, Slovakia (+11.1%), Bulgaria (+2.1%) and Poland (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +11.1% from 2012-2022. The Czech Republic and the Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-3.5%), France (-3.6%) and Germany (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Italy, Poland and Slovakia increased by +4.5, +2.7 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat in Europe, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Italy was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-0.4% per year) and Germany (-6.7% per year).

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 20%.
