In 2021, overseas shipments of frozen freshwater fish increased by 2% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after seven years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, frozen freshwater fish exports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 9.6%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Norway (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons), Spain (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) represented roughly 87% of total exports in 2021. Belgium (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +13.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest frozen freshwater fish supplying countries in Europe were the Netherlands ($X), Russia ($X) and Norway ($X), together accounting for 53% of total exports.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +8.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Europe
In 2021, overseas purchases of frozen freshwater fish increased by 2.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, frozen freshwater fish imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 6.9%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of frozen freshwater fish imports in 2021 were the Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together finishing at 47% of total import. It was distantly followed by the UK (X tons), France (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together comprising a 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Ukraine (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ukraine (with a CAGR of +59.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 41% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Ukraine, Poland and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 48%.
Ukraine, with a CAGR of +61.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
