Ginger Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe ginger market decreased by -11% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Overall, consumption showed resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Ginger Production in Europe

In value terms, ginger production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 1,344% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Albania (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of ginger production, accounting for 86% of total volume. Moreover, ginger production in Albania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Lithuania (X tons), sevenfold.

In Albania, ginger production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Lithuania (-1.0% per year) and Slovenia (-37.3% per year).

Ginger Exports

Exports in Europe

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of ginger, when their volume decreased by -22.5% to X tons. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, ginger exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2022. Germany (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 15% share of total exports. Albania (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ginger exports from the Netherlands stood at +8.1%. At the same time, Belarus (+122.1%), Albania (+24.8%), Spain (+23.4%), Germany (+14.6%) and Poland (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +122.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Spain, Germany, Albania and Belarus increased by +4.4, +3.6, +3.4 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest ginger supplier in Europe, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands totaled +10.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+13.8% per year) and Spain (+26.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, declining by -18.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 34%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ginger Imports

Imports in Europe

In 2022, overseas purchases of ginger decreased by -7.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 26%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ginger imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands represented the main importer of ginger in Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 33% of total imports in 2022. Germany (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the UK (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together held near 42% share of total imports. The following importers - France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +17.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 60% of total imports. Russia, France, Spain, Poland and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Among the main importing countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +16.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -19.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
