The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the glass in mass exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Belgium (X tons), distantly followed by Switzerland (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the key exporters of glass in the mass, together comprising 67% of total exports. Romania (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Poland (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Norway (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to glass in the mass exports from Belgium stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Poland (+55.1%), Romania (+33.1%), Denmark (+32.1%), Norway (+9.9%), Hungary (+9.5%), the UK (+7.7%), Ireland (+4.7%), France (+3.7%) and Sweden (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), the UK ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 50% share of total exports. France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Romania, Ireland, Poland, Hungary, Norway, Denmark and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
Among the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +41.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of glass in the mass decreased by -3.4% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, glass in mass imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, glass in the mass imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, glass in mass imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the major importers of glass in the mass in Europe, together resulting at approx. 36% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together constituting a 33% share of total imports. Austria (X tons), France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +21.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest glass in the mass importing markets in Europe were Germany ($X), Portugal ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 39% of total imports. The Netherlands, the Czech Republic, the UK, France, Spain, Belgium, Croatia, Bulgaria, Austria and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 51%.
Among the main importing countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +17.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -7.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 16%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
