Glass Closure Market Size in Europe

The Europe glass closure market was estimated at $X in 2022, picking up by 1.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of glass stoppers, lids and other closures, when their volume decreased by -34.9% to X tons. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, glass closure exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Austria (X tons) represented the largest exporter of glass stoppers, lids and other closures, creating 34% of total exports. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together making up a 46% share of total exports. Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Russia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +13.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) emerged as the largest glass closure supplier in Europe, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 14% share.

In the Czech Republic, glass closure exports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Austria (+8.1% per year) and France (-2.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 23%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Glass Closure Imports

Imports in Europe

After five years of growth, supplies from abroad of glass stoppers, lids and other closures decreased by -11.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, glass closure imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Italy was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 37% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), Russia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the UK (X tons), together making up a 50% share of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Italy increased at an average annual rate of +13.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+28.8%), the Czech Republic (+28.1%), Spain (+17.3%), the Netherlands (+14.2%), the UK (+8.8%) and France (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Europe, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012-2022. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+16 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+6.6 p.p.), Romania (+6.3 p.p.) and Spain (+5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while France, Russia and Germany saw its share reduced by -5.1%, -10% and -13.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glass stoppers, lids and other closures in Europe, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.7% share.

In Italy, glass closure imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+5.3% per year) and Germany (-0.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+12.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
